Constable on Corruption Charges Offered Bail

Constable Andrew Smith was offered bail in the sum of Three Hundred Thousand Dollars (300,000.00) when he appeared before the St. Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 for corruption charges.

Reports are that on Thursday, July 21, 2016, Constable Smith was a part of a team on patrol in the Waltham Park area of Kingston that signaled a motorist to stop. After requesting the documents for the vehicle, a member of the team observed that the Insurance Certificate was missing, further enquiries revealed that the document had expired. A sum of Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) was solicited by Smith from the motorist in order not be prosecuted for breaching the Road Traffic Act.

The motorist was unable to pay over the money at the time it was requested and arrangements were made for the payment. Subsequently a report was made to MOCA which resulted in the arrest and charge of Smith on Monday March 6, 2017.

Investigations into the matter continue.
